ABTA LifeLine’s Big Charity Week 2016

Wow, what a week!

It feels like yesterday that we were watching paper planes buzzing across social media for last year’s Big Charity Week. And now we are admiring everyone’s nautical efforts for Big Charity Week 2016!

The Big Charity Week is ABTA LifeLine’s flagship fundraising and awareness initiative that encourages individuals and organisations in the travel industry to get together and hold a fun and exciting event, big or small.

This year we kicked things off by encouraging you to join in with our ‘Float your Boat for LifeLine’ campaign. The idea was to make a paper boat using our template designed by TTG or to come up with your own design and find somewhere to float it. We turned the campaign into a bit of a competition and asked for a small donation and for you to share your creations across social media. We saw some great photos being shared; here at ABTA, Affordable Car Hire’s designer fleet and of course Clia’s own branded ship template. Best location had to go to Pippa Jacks (TTG) and Steve Williams who took their boats to Ireland!

With the theme decided we were thrilled to see all things nautical during the week!

We had the fantastic LifeLine Roadies out in force dressed as pirates, lobsters and even Captain Birdseye and a fish finger (which clinched the best outfit award for us!)

Dressing up was a popular option with other organisations too. We had Kuoni, MIdcounties Cooperative, Affordable Car Hire and Funway Holidays all modelling their naval get-up. 

Companies also planned their own fundraising initiatives. From Shearings’ treasure map game, multiple Wii waterports competitions across the industry and of course good old fashioned bake sales it was great to see a variety of events during the week. Whilst we wanted everyone to have fun during the week it is important to remember why we do it. Not only is it a chance to spread the word about the charity and the help it can give to industry colleagues (both past and present), but it is also about raising essential funds to help those who need it most.

No one story is the same; the people we help find themselves needing financial support for a variety of reasons. From life changing medical conditions and disability, to bereavement and domestic violence our LifeLine reaches far and wide.

So a huge thank you to everyone who got involved and supported our Big Charity Week. Thanks to you we can help even more people in our travel community.
