The ABTA LifeLine Bursary
The ABTA LifeLine bursary was established in memory of Colin Heal, a long serving industry leader and ABTA LifeLine Trustee.
What is the bursary?
The bursary has been designed to help an individual in our travel community, someone who without it, may not have had the opportunity to reach their full potential and fulfil their aspirations in their chosen travel career.
The bursary is to assist with the course fees for a relevant vocational or professional qualification.
The maximum grant available is £2000 a year for a maximum of 3 years. The individual must demonstrate their commitment and progression in order to receive funding for years 2 and 3.
The successful applicant will be allocated a senior mentor from the travel industry who will be able to offer advice and support, and the opportunity to attend key industry events. These may include:
- ABTA’s Travel Matters
- ABTA training programmes
Finally, the recipient may be invited to spend a day with an ABTA Member company, Midcounties Cooperative or Kuoni, to gain experience of a different organisation.
What else may be required?
The bursary recipient will be asked to blog about their experience which will be featured on the ABTA LifeLine website.
Who can apply?
Anyone who is currently working for an ABTA Member can apply for the bursary.
The Trustees will be looking to provide assistance to the candidate who would not be able to consider further or higher education without support.
ABTA LifeLine are especially interested in people who work in small or medium sized companies (fewer than 250 employees) front line travel agents or individuals who feel that in order to reach their full potential they currently lack an appropriate qualification.
The application process
Before applying for the ABTA LifeLine bursary, applicants must first check if their company has a training or staff development programme and ask for funding.
If their company does not have a programme then applicants are invited to complete the ABTA LifeLine bursary application form.
The application form will be reviewed by ABTA LifeLine and potential shortlisted recipients invited to a selection interview.
Applicants will be expected to demonstrate what they want to achieve through their choice of study and how it relates to their career development path within the travel industry. They will be required to tell the panel how they would make use of the development opportunity and about their aspirations for the future.
